“Vulnerability is the ever-present and abiding undercurrent of our natural state. To run from vulnerability is to run from the essence of our nature; the attempt to be invulnerable is the vain attempt to become something we are not.” — from the essay, VULNERABILITY in David Whyte, Consolations
I grew up in Belfast at a time of profound individual and collective vulnerability, creativity, and resilience. The context was one of societal oppression, and the potential, yet to be realised, for deeper individual and collective connection and transformation.
I was drawn to engaging with the unknown, not knowing where it would lead. Becoming a versatile practitioner or 'reflectavist', is a term I use that communicates the heart of both being and doing, of action and reflection as researcher, organisational and societal level practitioner as well as psychotherapist.
I have been honoured to work locally and to travel widely to work as part of specialist somatic trauma training teams in South Africa, Sri Lanka, Scandanavia, and Europe. Exploring ecological and relational theory and practices of connection and change is part of my practice as a therapist, supervisor, trainer, writer/researcher and consultant.
